MARLBOROUGH
Marlborough is one of the sunniest regions in New Zealand. With it's sunshine and crisp winter days it produces some of the best wines in the world.
In the north of Marlborough are Picton and Havelock. They are good bases to explore the sheltered inlets, islands and beaches of the Marlborough Sounds. These are bordered by the bush clad slopes of the Richmond Ranges. To the south and western regions brown tussocked hills and rugged mountains dominate the terrain.
Blenheim the main town of Marlborough is at the eastern end of the Wairau Plain. This separates the northern and southern landscapes of the region. The Wairau Plain meets the sea at Cloudy Bay. Further south the highest mountain outside of the Southern Alps, Mount Tapuae O nuku at 2885 metres, ' Footprint of the Rainbow' presides over the Awatere Valley and is part of the Inland Kaikouras.
Summers are warm and dry and have an average temperature between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. Average temperatures for winter are 10 to 15 degrees with some morning frosts. Most rainfall occurs in late winter and early spring.
